Buddy Walk
and
Walk in the Park

What is the difference between the Buddy Walk and The Walk in the Park?

Buddy Walk - June 8, 2008

The Buddy Walk—All-inclusive fun walk/run with the focus on raising funds to support DSAGSL’s mission and programming.

This event will continue to be the major fundraiser of the year for the DSAGSL. The day will start with a fun walk/run followed by the same party-like atmosphere as in previous years including bounce houses, entertainment, food and drink, awards and sponsorship booths. This is a free event, open to all who wish to participate. Participants will be asked to fill out a short pre-registration form. T-shirts will be available for sale prior to the event through local mall efforts and online sales. The major incentive for individuals and teams to raise money ties directly into the Cardinal game for the Walk in the Park, on September 7, 2008.

Walk in the Park - September 7, 2008

Walk in the Park with your Baseball Buddies—Pre-game rally, walk around the stadium, and game with the focus on family and friends, general positive awareness of DS, and city-wide publicity for DSAGSL.

As mentioned above, there is an incentive for everyone wishing to collect donations. For each individual who raises $100.00 in sponsorships for the Buddy Walk, they will be given one ticket to the Cardinal game on September 7, access to walk on the warning track and a T-shirt. The DSAGSL plans to purchase over 3,500 tickets for the Cardinal game. These tickets will first be awarded to individuals and teams who participate in the sponsorship program. Sponsorships are encouraged to be turned in by July 15, 2008, to ensure individual and group tickets to the game. Family and friends will need to register as a team to better organize group tickets. This first round is anticipated to take a great sum of the tickets the DSAGSL has already purchased for the game.  Individual ticket sales begin July 21, 2008. The fundraising goal is for individuals to collect $100.00 in sponsorships to receive the day’s perks leaving very few tickets for sale. There will be a pre-game rally with band/DJ playing before the grand announced entrance into the stadium. The pre-game ceremony will remain the same for top individuals/teams bringing in the most sponsorships. Pre-game field participants will continue to involve individuals with Down syndrome.

What is involved in the Buddy Walk?

The Buddy Walk is a free event open to all who register. After you check in at the pre-registration table and collect your free Down Syndrome of Greater St. Louis water bottle and Goody Bag, you will have the opportunity to meet up with family and friends, visit booths and get set to walk. A 1.2 mile course will loop our event. After the walk, 62 Sports will provide bounce houses which will enhance the carnival-like feel of the day. Food and drinks will be provided throughout the event.

Do I have to create a “team” to participate in either day?

It is not required to create a “team.” However, it is encouraged to create a team so your family and friends have a place to pre-register for the Buddy Walk as well as sponsor your team captain in the quest to raise funds for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis. By creating a team, you also have an edge in collecting sponsors for Walk in the Park $100 Sponsorship Packages.

If you would like to visit our current list of teams, visit our Buddy Walk Teams page.

What is included in a $100 Sponsorship Package?

The Walk in the Park $100 Sponsorship Packages include a 2008 Special Edition Walk in the Park T-Shirt, a goody bag, a box seat to the Cardinal Game and walking on the warning track with family and friends, contributing to the mission of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis.

What if I collect $8,000 in sponsorships, but don’t need 80 tickets?

It is at your discretion to set a team goal as to how many $100 Sponsorship Packages your team members will need to attend the Walk in the Park. We can only hope that every team will exceed the team goal set by his/her members. Any additional funds raised above your team’s goal will continue to support the mission of the DSAGSL and will be greatly appreciated.

Who is a sponsor?

A sponsor is anyone you and/or your team reaches out to who contribute monetarily to the DSAGSL. Collecting sponsors for your team is a great way to raise funds for the DSAGSL while promoting awareness about Down syndrome.

Why do I have to raise sponsors to attend The Walk in the Park?

The Buddy Walk has always been the DSAGSL’s major fundraiser for the year. In order for the DSAGSL to function daily as well as improve current programs while creating new programs, funds are needed. The $100 Sponsorship Packages was created to reward teams and individuals who help make the DSAGSL strengthen and grow.

What are some ways to raise sponsors in order to attend The Walk in the Park?

There are many tips and ideas in raising funds for your team. We have included a Fundraising Tips and Ideas Page full of ways to help your team raise top dollar. Two of our members raised over $1,400.00 with a car wash at a National City branch on May 11, 2007. Not only is that 14 $100 Sponsorship Packages awarded in less than 4 hours of work, the money goes to the DSAGSL to build a better future for people with DS right here in our community.

Will my team’s $100 Sponsorship Package Cardinal game tickets be grouped together?

Yes. Any cash/check donations you collect needs to be turned in by July 15, 2008 and will be added to your online team donations raised. This will better ensure all your group’s tickets will be seated together.

What if I only raise $300 and I have more than three family and friends who wish to go to the Walk in the Park?

It is important to get your team members involved in raising sponsorships for your team. There are many sound ideas and tips to raise sponsorships on our website. Joining forces with family and friends wishing to participate in the Walk in the Park will only increase funds raised while building team spirit. It is possible for teams to come up short in raising enough funds for all team members to receive $100 Sponsorship Packages. With this being said, remaining tickets will be available for sale on July 21, 2008. If this becomes your team’s situation and in order to ensure both $100 Sponsorship Packages and individually sold tickets are grouped together at the stadium, both are due at the same time on or after July 15, 2008. We unfortunately cannot guarantee $100 Sponsorship Packages after tickets go on sale on July 21, 2008.

How many Cardinal game tickets are available?

The DSAGSL plans to purchase over 3,500 individual seats for the Walk in the Park Cardinal game.

How much will individual game day tickets cost?

Individual ticket prices at $28.00 and include a Walk in the Park T-shirt, entrance on the warning track prior to the game and a box ticket to watch the game.  The value of each ticket and T-shirt exceeds $28.00 and is not a tax deductible donation.

I am unable to attend either event. Can I still donate to the DSAGSL?

Yes. Since the Buddy Walk is the DSAGSL’s major fundraising effort for the year, all donations are welcomed. We will miss you at this year’s event but understand calendars get full very easily. Please stay in touch. There are numerous ways to get involved throughout the year.

Can I volunteer at the Buddy Walk?

In an effort to keep our members with their supportive families and friends on this special day, we are looking for volunteers to fill many positions. If you would like to learn more about how you and/or your group can volunteer at the Buddy Walk, please call the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis’ office at (314) 961.2504. Even if you are only available part of the day, we can still use your smiling face.
